Brawley "Cheese" Chisholm, who was cut from the Cherokee High School basketball team as a sophomore, will show aspiring young players the drills he used to become a Harlem Globetrotter.
Chisholm will conduct his inaugural basketball camp Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Katz JCC in Cherry Hill.
"It will be more of a hands-on camp, and it was be intense," said Chisholm, a former standout at Ball (Ind.) State. "I want to show what it takes to be a Division I player. But my main focus is to tell the kids not to quit."
Chisholm, 26, was cut from Cherokee as a sophomore by former coach Ron Powell, who is expected to be a speaker at the camp for boys and girls, 9 to 17. Former Cherokee teammates Clarence Jackson, Bilal Benn and Richie Tarr are scheduled to be guest instructors.
"I feel (the camp) will give me more time to hang out with the kids, too," Chisholm said.
Chisholm, 6-foot-2 and 165 pounds, attended Cherokee from 2000-04 after moving to Marlton from Brooklyn with his mother following eighth-grade.
He originally went to a prep school for a year before playing at Western Texas Junior College for two years. He then played at Ball State where he earned two letters and graduated with a degree in communications.
Chisholm will bark another message at the camp.
"I had to get my grades better," he said.
Chisholm's interest in doing a camp grew after doing a free clinic last year.
"I love the game," he said. "I want the kids to love the game, too. But you have to work hard and make sacrifices."
